{"id":3955,"date":"2021-06-08T11:33:11","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T15:33:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.talentrise.com\/?p=3955"},"modified":"2021-06-08T11:33:13","modified_gmt":"2021-06-08T15:33:13","slug":"exploring-the-future-of-the-workplace-with-hr-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.talentrise.com\/exploring-the-future-of-the-workplace-with-hr-leaders\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring the Future of the Workplace with HR Leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ready for the million-dollar question that\u2019s been on the minds of the collective working world for the past several months? <strong>\u201cWhat is the future of the workplace <em>really <\/em>going to look like?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prevalence\u2014and overall acceptance\u2014of remote work has grown tenfold over the past year. We\u2019ve reached the point where some companies have implemented fully remote plans for their workforces\u2014plans that will continue well beyond the pandemic\u2019s end. Yet even as COVID-19 concerns continue to dwindle in the United States, the future of the workplace still remains unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recently led a webinar panel hosted by HRMAC\u2019s Chicago chapter that discussed this very topic. Joined by a group of HR and TA leaders from the Chicago area, we provided our personal opinions on the future of the workplace, addressed common workforce trends, and anticipated what to expect in the months\u2014and years\u2014ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talentrise.com\/the-new-hybrid-workplace-what-you-need-to-know\/\">The New Hybrid Workplace: What You Need to Know<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Employee surveying<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To generate a comprehensive understanding of their employees\u2019 workplace expectations and preferences, organizations have utilized pulse surveys to more effectively plan for the future. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/darshini-brown-7519b66\/\">Dars<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/darshini-brown-7519b66\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">h<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/darshini-brown-7519b66\/\">ini Brown<\/a>, CHRO at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saiglobal.com\/en-us\/standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SAI Global<\/a>, these surveys revealed interesting results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reports conducted by SAI Global showed that only 4% of the company\u2019s workforce wants to return to in-office work on a full-time basis upon the conclusion of the pandemic. In Darshini\u2019s eyes, this signaled a dramatic shift in how the workplace will operate in years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost people aren\u2019t excited about going back to the way things were,\u201d said Darshini. \u201cIn reality, workers are looking for more flexibility\u2014and remote work alternatives will certainly provide that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Honest and open communication<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Effectively laying the groundwork for the future of the workforce is largely contingent on the organization\u2019s ability to communicate with its employees. More specifically, are employers willing to have honest and open conversations with their workers about expectations moving forward?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked about the greatest cultural challenge that her organization overcame during the pandemic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/beata-weiss-3a679a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beata Weiss<\/a>\u2014Vice President of Human Resources at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epsilon.com\/us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Epsilon<\/a>\u2014cited a change in communication styles. By being more direct with employees, her organization was able to foster more transparent and heart-to-heart conversations with workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile it may have been uncomfortable for our executives and team leaders, I think our change in communication style was a differentiator for our organization,\u201d said Beata. \u201cOur teams prioritized honesty and transparency in our discussions, and our associates responded well to that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving forward, Beata predicts that this same degree of clarity will be pivotal in properly rolling out workplace plans\u2014regardless of whether organizations choose to return to the office or remain working remotely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looming workplace evolution<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While remote work represents a scorching hot trend in today\u2019s workforce\u2014particularly for working parents\u2014is it sustainable? While there are large populations of the workforce who are intent on remaining remote, other sectors of employees are craving a return to the office. Take it from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/gina-martin-335ba1b0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gina Martin<\/a>, who serves as the Office and Facility Manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotrading.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chicago Trading Co<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gina predicts the progression of an \u201corganic shift\u201d back to in-office work over the next several months. As recent college grads and entry-level employees may have little to no experience working in an office environment, these workers may jump at the opportunity to form more meaningful relationships in a traditional workplace setting. Gina pointed to statistics that show greater team-based collaboration and efficiencies when in an office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of my friends is a commercial realtor, and he said that all of his clients are taking back the office space that they gave back last year,\u201d commented Gina. \u201cI think that\u2019s pretty telling about what employers are anticipating as we emerge from the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Formulating a return-to-office plan<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So how should your organization approach its plan to return to the office? According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/brittanishaw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brittani Shaw<\/a>\u2014Chief People Officer at <a href=\"https:\/\/alerongroupinc.sharepoint.com\/:w:\/s\/BLRProposalTeam\/Ebp4HTOjeQxCt5pHfLWRxNUB-WNmVTafNGaPAh7QpT9osg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Litera<\/a>\u2014much of return-to-work preparation depends on the region(s) that companies operate in. As a global company with offices across the world, Brittany has had to manage these concerns herself\u2014and offered the following advice to fellow HR leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to approach return-to-office plans by geography. For example, Australians are back in the office with no masks, while India is suffering from hundreds of thousands of new cases every day. Continue to monitor the COVID numbers before making a prudent decision. But remember to keep the health and safety of your employees first. Don\u2019t do anything that would jeopardize their well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the turmoil that our world has endured since the outbreak of the pandemic, all four webinar panelists expressed confidence that our world would be back to normal in no time. While it remains to be seen what this \u201cnormal\u201d will look like, company leaders need to think carefully before making a \u201cone size fits all\u201d workplace decision\u2014one with significant implications.
